AUGUST 21, 2022

On Aug. 21, your child may be moving on up. Our family ministry is currently divided into the following age groups: nursery, toddlers, preschool, K-2nd grades and 3rd-5th grades. If your child is moving up to a new age group, here is what you need to know.

Age-based transitions:

  • Infants are welcome to be checked into the nursery as soon as parents feel comfortable doing so. Some parents choose to check in for diaper changing and feeding as needed.
  • Children move up to the Toddler classroom around 18 months — some earlier, some later. This decision is specific to each child’s development and personality, and when they are ready and wanting a more structured space for learning and play.
  • Your child can move up to the Preschool class after their 3rd birthday. Once a child reaches the Preschool class, they will begin joining the adults during the worship portion of the service. After worship, they will then be dismissed with other school-aged children for age-appropriate lessons and activities.

Grade-based transitions:

The current structure for family ministry is that preschool to 5th grade children are checked in by a parent or guardian in the lobby, join service for worship and then head back to class. School-age children rotate through stations (Story/Study, Create/Craft, Game/Play) in age-specific groups (Preschool, K-2nd, and 3rd-5th). On Move-Up Sunday, here is what to know:

  • Children moving into preschool will start in the story station.
  • Children going into kindergarten will start in the create/craft station with the K-2nd group.
  • Children going into 3rd grade will start in the games station with the 3rd-5th group.
  • Children going into 6th grade will stay with the adults for the sermon. They will also have the opportunity to join the DCV Middle School Youth Group. More details on that transition will be coming soon.

These transitions will take place on Move-Up Sunday on Aug. 21.

One other change:

In addition to Move-Up Sunday, we will be making a small change to our Sunday service liturgy that will impact family ministry. For the past several months, we have been practicing ministry time toward the end of worship, and school-aged children have been present.

Beginning on Aug. 21, we will be moving ministry time to the end of service. Preschool through 5th grade children will be dismissed after worship and will have opportunities to experience and practice Holy Spirit ministry during family ministry stations.

Proverbs 22:6 says, “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” As a church family, together we are committed to teaching our children the way of Jesus and helping them walk in it. The investment we are making in our children today will have spiritual rewards today, tomorrow and eternally.
