AUGUST 18, 2024

With the school year just around the corner, DCV Family Ministry is preparing for Move-Up Sunday when some children move to a different age group/classroom on Sunday mornings. This Fall, we are also introducing an exciting restructuring of Family Ministry. Read on for all the details.

What’s changing?

Many of you know that since COVID, DCV has been operating in a stations-style ministry model for children. Kids have been separated into age-based groups and rotated through three different stations — storytime, crafts, and games/snack.

We are excited to announce that starting on Aug. 18, we will be returning to age-based classrooms. Here are the classrooms:

Pre-K/Kindergarten: Preschoolers and kindergarteners will be together in the current preschool classroom. A lead teacher and an assistant teacher will guide the children through age-appropriate activities, crafts, singing, and a Bible story. There will also be plenty of time for free play! Children can be checked in at the beginning of service.

1st-3rd grade: First through third graders will gather in what is currently the games station. A lead teacher and assistant teacher will guide children through activities, crafts, and a Bible story each week. These children will begin with their parents for worship and then be released to their classrooms.

4th-5th grade: Fourth through fifth graders will gather in what is currently the storytime and crafts stations. A lead teacher and assistant teacher will guide children through activities, crafts and a Bible story each week. These children will also begin with their parents for worship and then be released to their classrooms.

Infants and Toddler room: Infants and toddlers are welcome to join the nursery as soon as parents feel comfortable doing so. Some parents choose to check in for diaper changing and feeding as needed.

Why are we making this change?

While the stations-based model for Family Ministry was effective during the uncertain times of COVID, we recognize a return to age-based classrooms will provide a better environment for children to learn and grow.

After conducting a survey, we learned that volunteers have struggled to get to know the children, because they have such a short window of time during each station. By moving to age-based classrooms, teachers will have a longer period of time with the kids, allowing them to build deeper relationships and trust.

Age-based classrooms will also allow us to create lesson plans that are age appropriate across the board and reduce some of the noise problems that we have experienced between stations in our current ministry model.

All these changes will take place on Move-Up Sunday on Aug. 18. We encourage you to talk to your children in advance about these changes so they can be prepared for a different experience on Sunday mornings.
