A Summer in Philippians

At the beginning of 2023, the Delaware City Vineyard elders shared that they sensed God inviting our church into a year of leaning into living our lives on display. We as a church re-upped our commitment to bearing witness to the life and light of God to a watching world.

As we lean into this invitation from God, the book of Philippians offers us a way forward. In his letter to the Philippians, Paul offers a vision of "shining like stars" in a dark world (Phil. 2:15) as we take on the "same mindset as Christ Jesus" (2:5). Paul writes his letter to the church in Philippi from prison yet writes from a place of deep gratitude and joy, while exhorting his fellow believers to live with that same joy, peace and unity in all circumstances.

Join us this Summer at DCV as we dig into the book of Philippians and enter into a world where our "private walk with Christ" meets God's call for public engagement with the world. Or as NT Wright put it in his translation of Philippians 1:27, "The one thing I would stress is this: your public behavior must match up to the gospel of the king."

Summer Challenge

Philippians 2:6-11 is believed to have been a hymn or prayer of the early church. These are words that were likely recited or sung regularly by these followers of Christ as a way of making the story of Jesus the guiding story of their lives. What if we too made the Christ Hymn the soundtrack of our lives? We are inviting you to read or listen to this passage daily this Summer and commit these words to memory. We will read it regularly at church too, as together we commit to taking on the "same mindset of Christ Jesus".
